Tips for Good EVP Recordings:
If traditional cassette recorders are being used instead of digital recorders, use the following rules: use a full-size tape recorder and not the handheld models. The reason is the handheld models have the tendency to record the moving gears inside of the recorder. The small cassette recorders are fine for witness interviews but not for EVP recordings. To reduce the chance of a "bleed through" effect, only record on brand new cassettes and only record on one side of each cassette. Bleed through is when overlapping recordings unintentionally mix together.
When a microphone is needed, use an external static-free microphone. Be careful not to bump the microphone. If the microphone is bumped or dropped, make a verbal note on the recording. Make verbal notes of other natural sounds such as gusting winds and creaking doors. Most digital recorders do not require external microphones. In some cases, a microphone might increase the static interference.
Begin the EVP process with stating who is present, the time and date, and the purpose of the recording. Ghost hunters should keep other conversations to a minimum and should never whisper during the recordings. This will help distinguish between human voices and genuine paranormal phenomena.
Do not use other noisy equipment in close proximity to the audio recorders. The noises might cut off the recording and the interference from these devices can create sound distortions and audio feedback.
Potential EVP Questions
It is a good idea to prepare questions in advance. This will save time and the person running the EVP session will not forget to ask an important question. This is a list of possible EVP questions. Ghost hunters should be able to formulate their own questions after evaluating the research. Keep the questions simple so that the answers can be simple. It is acceptable to repeat the same question several times.
What is your name?
How old are you?
Why are you here?
Is there anyone else here?
What year were you born?
Are you married?
Did you have children?
How old are they?
What are their names?
What is your occupation?
Can I take your picture?
Did you live here?
How do you feel?
Is there anything that you would like to tell us?
EVP questions should always be respectful. When nothing else is working, it can be tempting to provoke a ghost into action. Do not use vulgarity, threats or intimidation. It is not productive or professional, and it could be potentially dangerous.
Final Notes on EVP Recordings:
EVPs are important because the recording documents communication with ghosts. Ghost hunting is largely a percentage game. Patience and luck can play a large role in successful EVP recordings. Ghost hunters can become frustrated with the process if nothing of value is recorded after several attempts, but stick with this process. Some ghost hunters have recorded successful EVP recordings on their first attempt while other ghost hunters did not get a successful EVP recording until after more than a hundred attempts. Depending on the capability of a ghost hunter's equipment, it could be a good idea to record the entire ghost hunt. If ghost hunters are capturing good EVP when audio recorders are turned on, just imagine what amazing phenomena might be missed when no one is recording.
Do not forget that any device that records sound can capture an EVP - tape recorders, telephone answering machines, television recording devices, home computers, laptops and video recorders are the most popular. Ghost hunters who want to listen to EVP recordings captured by others can find samples on the Internet. Go to a favorite Internet search engine and search for the following: Electronic Voice Phenomena, EVP, EVP Recordings or EVP Ghost Recordings.

EVP (Electronic Voice Phenomena)
EVP (Electronic Voice Phenomena)
Electronic Voice Phenomena, or EVP, is the process of recording messages from a ghost using an audio-recording device. Parapsychologists first implemented the techniques of communication over fifty years ago. Typical EVP recordings are brief, usually consisting of only a couple words or a short phrase. EVPs can be recorded on a variety of audio-recording devices such as cassette recorders, digital voice recorders, reel-to-reel tape recorders, video recorders, computer systems and other devices that record sound. There are several different types of EVP recording sessions. The first category is a question-and-answer session. Using a recording device, a ghost hunter asks a series of questions hoping a ghost will answer the questions during the session. Normally, the people in the session do not hear the ghostly replies until after the audio recording has been replayed. There are several popular theories on this subject and some ghost hunters theorize that the human ear is unable to hear the frequency of the ghost's communication. There are numerous types of sound frequencies that the human ear cannot detect. However, this is not a rule because there are rare occasions when a ghost hunter will hear and record the communication as it occurs.
In a normal question-and-answer session, a ghost hunter should ask a single question and then silently wait about ten seconds before asking the next question. The space of time between questions allows the ghost an opportunity to answer the question. If a ghost hunter asks questions too quickly, there is a risk that the next questions will overlap the ghost's response. After a couple minutes of asking questions, stop the recording and review the results. Listen to the recording closely for strange sounds or voices. The replies might not be clear or loud so the answers are not always obvious and the voices could be in different languages.
The second type of EVP recording session is a standalone session. The ghost hunter places one or more recording devices in spots where ghosts are believed to be the most active. Several hours later, the recordings can be analyzed. The ghost hunter must attentively listen to each and every second of the entire recording. Voice-activation features are incredibly useful by saving hours of valuable time. A voice-activation feature means that the recording device will sit on pause until a noise triggers the device to start recording. Hours of time can be reduced to minutes of recorded audio files.
Ghost hunters can find success with EVP recordings. However, EVPs also have serious problems. One key characteristic important with EVP is the ghost hunter's own listening process. The recordings must be carefully reviewed multiple times. People who listen to recordings long enough can begin to misinterpret sounds. Listeners also must be able to weed out background interference. The power of suggestion is an influential force. A ghost hunter should think about giving the recordings to a trustworthy impartial listener. It is normal for a ghost hunter to hear what they want to hear from a recording. The ghost hunter knows what questions were asked and they have an idea of what answers to expect.
The legitimacy of EVP recordings is impossible to prove regardless of what is recorded. Critics have a valid point when explaining that the sounds or voices recorded can either be misinterpretations, interference caused by radio signals, low-quality equipment malfunctions or hoaxes. Even when an EVP recording is not a misinterpretation or a hoax, there is still no way to prove that these recordings are actually the voices of the dead.
Once an EVP sample has been recorded, the next step is to make backup copies of that recording in case something causes damage to the original. Digital recorders have an advantage over cassette tapes because digital files can transfer easily to a computer system without sound distortion. Analog tapes can be transferred to a digital format but sometimes the recording quality will suffer during the transfer. Store the backups in multiple locations such as the computer's hard drive, on a website, on a CD or a flash drive.
Computer software programs can help analyze EVP recordings. Audio programs can remove background noise, highlight audio channels, increase or decrease the volume, and offer a variety of editing filters. It is important to remember the following rule: never make changes to the original EVP recording. Leave the original copy untouched. Only edit and make changes to copies of the original. There are plenty of audio software programs available. Deciding which audio programs are best is a matter of personal preference.
Outside Investigation Tips
Outside Investigation Tips
The problem with outside investigations is that the environment is working against the ghost hunter. It is difficult to record EVP sessions outside because there are natural noises that could filter into the recording such as the wind, a barking dog, a passing car, etc.
Photographs and video recordings become much more difficult, especially at night, because both types of cameras are built to capture images within a much shorter radius in lowlight environments. The flash on a still camera and the light on a video camera will typically allow an image radius of fifteen to twenty feet. If the video recorder has a night-vision feature that will help illuminate the darkness, but cameras with this feature often have a hard time distinguishing shapes, which will cause the cameraÕs auto-focus to randomly adjust.
If the location happens to be a cemetery, keep in mind that some tombstones have glossy surfaces that will reflect light, which can create strange anomalies on photographs and video recordings. Cemeteries can also create sound echoes, which could be mistaken for ghostly replies on EVP recordings.

Tips for Using Equipment
Cameras are a valuable tool for investigating a
haunting. They provide a visual documentation of the site and the
phenomena occurring. Cameras are neither for nor against the
supernatural allowing what we do not see with our closed minds to be
photographed. We use Digital with auto focus/auto flash cameras.
When taken pictures it is also wise to say flash. While photographing at the site you should try to avoid any unnecessary focus points that might have lights, reflective surfaces, poles or any other obstruction that will interfere with evaluation or determination of the photograph and it's elements. All photographs should be cataloged with the corresponding negative for archival storage or saved on your hard drive, CD or disk.
Video cameras are an important instrument for an investigation. Unlike still cameras they provide us with constant visual and audio surveillance for review and observation. The video cameras we use are equipped with infrared capability and this is the mode we use. With video any phenomena occurring can be documented in its entirety. This will show the length of time the phenomena occurs, what is happening, the conditions surrounding the phenomena, and possibly even the cause of the phenomena.
When setting up the video camera place it in an area that has an unobstructed view of the whole area being investigated but not in the way of the investigators, an entrance, or an exit. You can also walk around with the video camera. When videoing state the location, time, investigators names, and weather conditions. It is extremely important to state any obstruction in the focus point of the video camera that may be perceived during review as an anomaly, such as a light source for example. Do not use any external light source when videoing. Most video cameras have night shot setting or IR setting on them, if so, use that setting because that puts the camera in the infrared mode. When reviewing the tape, be sure to mark down all the times a phenomenon occurs and include this in your report.
Digital Voice Recorders are with out a doubt one of the most important pieces of equipment that you should have in you investigators toolbox. Audio recorders are used for many different purposes throughout an investigation. Recorders are used for interviews, spontaneous thoughts, your notes and attempting to record electronic voice phenomena [EVP].
Types of EVPs:
Class A - Loud & clear - interpreted the same by all listeners.
Class B - Reasonably clear - interpreted differently by some listeners.
Class C - Requiring headphones to distinguish the voices and open to individual interpretation.
When using audio recorders be sure to state the location, time of investigation, and investigators names. When recording investigators names it would be wise to have each individual present state their own names, which will make it easier for distinction amongst voices heard on the tape during review. Voice activation mode should be deactivated on tape recorders during use when electronic voice phenomena is trying to be achieved due to the fact that it usually cuts off beginnings of words, sentences, and phrases. This is not necessary with digital recorders and they actual seem to work better in voice activation mode. If the recorder comes equipped with a tape counter record the locations on the tape where any audible phenomena is being heard during review.
The Electromagnetic Field Detector, also known as an EMF, is the modern day ghost researcher's tracking device, a very important piece of equipment. With this instrument it is possible to locate and track energy sources. It will detect fluctuations in electromagnetic fields and low strength moving EMF fields that have no source. Before using the EMF as a ghost research tool on an investigation be sure to walk around the area and take initial readings around energy sources such as light poles or electrical outlets to be sure of the readings you receive while scanning the area during the investigation. Most units when purchased come with a manual describing most household and major appliances and their corresponding electromagnetic reading.
When using the EMF as a tracking device look for fluctuations of 2.0 to 7.0, this usually indicates spirit presence. Anything higher or lower is normally has a natural source.
Thermometers are an instrument that is also very useful There are two types used regular digital thermometers and infrared non contact thermometers. When used on an investigation this will aid as a detection system for spirit presence. Rapid temperature drop of 10 degrees of more could indicate spirit presence.
The compass is a useful instrument to an investigator due to its compact size and low cost price. When used on an investigation this will indicate spirit presence when the needle cannot come to a precise heading or spins/moves erratically. This works on the same principle as a EMF meter.
Motion Detectors can be used to sense movements by often-unseen forces or spirits. You can get battery operated ones for about 20 dollars and they are great for inside but we have seen them used successfully outdoors as well, just watch the placement. You don't want a tree branch setting it off.
Two-way radios are a good communication system for an investigation team. Often the investigators tend to split up and this will allow quick and clear communication to avoid searching and yelling.
Flashlights are a must for any investigator. In most investigations this will be the only light source you will have. When using the flashlight, if possible, the investigator should have a red filter fitted to the lens. This will still provide clear vision but tinting the light keeps your night vision intact.
Extra batteries, are a must when you want to be well-prepared for an investigation. You do not want to have that once in a life time opportunity such as a full body apparition to float on by because your batteries were drained or you did not have enough film. In this field there is never enough when it comes to equipment.

Ghost-Hunting Guidelines
Ghost-Hunting Guidelines
Arrive early with the necessary gear to provide plenty of time to setup and test equipment. Decide what responsibility each ghost hunter will take on before arriving at the site. The predetermined positions allow each ghost hunter the necessary prep time before the ghost hunt.
Once at the ghost-hunting location, conduct a safety walkthrough. Visibly mark areas that present dangers or hazards to fellow ghost hunters. These hazards can be anything that could harm an investigator or damage equipment such as a large hole in the ground, a pointy nail sticking out from a doorway, a broken stair, etc. Mark these areas with glow sticks, glow in the dark or reflective tape, caution signs or rope the area off from entry. Also, make sure that every ghost hunter has been forewarned of dangerous obstacles.
Know the basic layout and terrain of the location. Record video of the initial walkthroughs and identify spots to begin ghost hunting. The ghost hunt will go much smoother and achieve better results if the ghost hunters are familiar and comfortable with their surroundings. During the walkthroughs, try not to unnecessarily touch or move objects unless it is required for safety or general access. Try to leave the natural environment uncontaminated.
It is important to keep traffic in and out of ghost-hunting locations to a minimum. The more people who enter an area the more likely that captured evidence will be contaminated. EVP recordings can pick up footsteps and voices from ghost hunters who should not have been in the room.
Start by setting up a safe room where equipment can be stored, communications between groups can be monitored and where ghost hunters can take a break from the investigation. The safe room should not be a place where a lot of paranormal activity is known to occur.
Ghost hunters should break up into small teams if and when possible. Do not conduct investigations alone; however, there is also no need to have ten ghost hunters in the same room. Send ghost hunters to mark, measure, photograph and record video in key spots. Measurements will provide references should objects move doing the investigation.
When ghost hunters are divided up into separate teams, each group should know where the other groups are located to avoid confusion and misinterpretations. Handheld radio communicators or cell phones are good devices for staying in contact with other ghost-hunting team members.
Document as much of the ghost hunt as possible - use notebooks, videocameras and audio recorders. Try asking the ghosts to appear. Put the video cameras on different light settings. Try different EVP recording methods. Play music that might be meaningful to the ghost. Do not be afraid to experiment during a ghost hunt.

The Risks and Dangers of Paranormal Investigation
Many paranormal investigators believe there are real dangers of a
spiritual nature that ghost hunting groups should be aware of. The
following editorial from The North East Paranormal Society does not
necessarily reflect my particular views, but I know that many paranormal
investigation groups share this warning.
It seems that ghost hunting has become quite a popular endeavor over the last several years. Whether it be a historic location, public venue or a private residence, what could be more exciting than going to a supposed haunted location to seek out the paranormal? Some people say cemeteries are very notorious for sightings of spirits, and many people hoping to get a thrill by going to such places to catch a glimpse these spirits, ghosts or entities.
REAL DANGERS
The metaphysical dangers of an investigation are real and should be taken seriously. If it were only the physical and emotional things to worry about, then this field of study could be done by almost anyone... but that's not the case. Sometimes things we are looking for are there, and more often than not these things can and do follow us home at the end of the night. This is where the dangers come in.
Yes, ghosts, spirits, demons and any other entity can attach themselves to you and follow you home. You need to keep in mind and be open to the fact that if there are good spirits, then there are bad ones as well. Most times the evil entity starts out claiming to be the spirit of a deceased person or someone that died tragically. This way the evil spirit can sucker the unsuspecting ghost hunters into believing that they are helping a spirit by communicating with it. This gives the demonic or negative being more energy to manifest into something that the unsuspecting did not count on. The act in itself is to trick you into thinking it is friendly, and this can go on for some time, or at least until the negative entity or demonic force feels that it has your full trust.
MENTAL BREAKDOWNS
Mental breakdowns can occur from paranormal investigations. We took on a case a few years back of a person who started watching all the ghost hunting TV shows and decided he was going to go out to a few claimed haunted locations to try and capture a few EVP (electronic voice phenomena). To his dismay, when he listened to the recordings he discovered that he had actually captured a few interesting voices. Well, one thing led to another and he became so obsessed with capturing EVP that he started doing it in his own home and, again to his dismay, he was capturing voices on his recorder.
After awhile of this he actually started hearing voices with his ear and not on his recorder. This is when we were called in. We did our best to help the individual and we came to the conclusion that it wasn't his house that was haunted -- it was him. We told him to stop recording the EVP and to have a cleansing done on the home, but he refused to listen and continued with his obsession.
It eventually got so bad that he cut off communications with his friends, family and us as well. To this day we have been unable to contact him, but his family has told us on occasion that he is not the same person he once was and that he spends most of his time alone talking to whatever followed him home. Could this be a pre-existing mental illness, an obsessive personality, or an evil entity that found a new victim?
BE AWARE
We believe it is our duty as skilled and experienced investigators to educate the public in the dangers that exist when investigating the paranormal. Yes, anyone can grab a recorder, ask a question and get a response. And yes, if you do not know how to protect yourself, anyone can have their lives turned upside down by unseen forces. We cannot express enough how important it is, if you want to become an investigator or you want to get involved in the paranormal, that you go with a team that has years of experience and is fully aware of the dangers out there and how to conduct themselves professionally and, most of all, safely.

THE GHOST HUNTERS CODE (CREDO)
THE GHOST HUNTERS CODE (CREDO)
Find out what you really need to know in order to be a true ghost hunter. The list consists of 25 statements that all ghost hunters should take to heart. The CODE will protect you from harm and guide you on your quest. Commit it to memory and it will serve you well.
What you really need to know...
1. Let them (ghosts & spirits) know they are not forgotten
Let your journey in this field of study be a labor of love. Remember to be respectful of ghosts & sprits, as they were once people, and still are for that matter.
2. Never tease, threaten or dare an unseen entity
First of all, we want to be taken seriously. Secondly, we are ghost hunters, not bullies. Lastly, we sure don't want any vindictive entities following us home or worse yet, attacking and hurting us.
3. Conduct yourself as a professional at all times
We always want to present ourselves as one in control. And that of course means around other investigators, victims of a haunting, and even to the ghosts themselves. Self-confidence and control will radiate like a beacon of light and thus serve as a shield of protection.
4. Never seek out entities on your own
A team of two works well and three is the ideal number. Larger groups will need to break up into smaller groups.
5. Addicting habits can be contradictory to your ghostly pursuits
Examples would be heavy addictions to drugs, alcohol, cigarettes, an abnormal sex drive, etc. These things in excess make you vulnerable and susceptible to attack. The attack stems from the entities attraction to your addictions and also because of your weakness. Mind altering substances are particularly enticing to them.
6. Pay attention to your dreams
Entities will use this relaxed state of mind & body to try and influence or torment it's targeted victim. Use whatever wording is necessary (according to your own spiritual beliefs) to command such an intrusion to cease. Command it in the holy name of your God or higher power.
7. Use religious relics & symbols as a protection
But only use these if you believe in what they can do. It's not the item itself that has the power, it's what it symbolizes according to your faith. That's what actually gives it its power.
8. Listen to your instincts and your intuition
Draw from the power within. You will find this to be your greatest resource.
9. Never leave a team member behind, not ever
Commit yourself to the task at hand until it's done. A combined effort makes the team a whole intricate working structure.
10. Always consider all aspects of a haunting
Go into an investigation with a kind heart and gracious attitude. But know that most hauntings can be explained. i.e. house settling, furnace noises etc. And as sad as it is, you must also consider the mental & emotional state of the victim as well. Paranoia, delusional aspects and mental illness in general may be a consideration. As a final note; it should also be stated however, that in some cases, an unstable person can actually be open to these types of visitors and or attacks.
11. Always remember, you are the one in control
You have the body and thus you have the power. It's really simple, you are in your element. This is your dimension and your reality. Unseen entities are intruders into your space. That is, unless they are invited in or find a way in through your weaknesses. Be strong by curving appetites and living a productive & wholesome life.
12. Be familiar with all aspects of the supernatural

13. Your best protection is in the life you lead
If you are active in ghostly pursuits then evil will cross your path, so be armed. If you are religious, then live your religion. But whether you are or not, you best protection is to live so as to put others first. Good deeds and a love for all life is your greatest protection.
14. Don't be afraid to experiment
Not everything you try will work. If one attempt or theory fails, keep trying. Simply move on to the next thing on your list. And by all means, have a list.
15. Do your homework
Consider all aspects of an investigation before you go. A preliminary walk through ahead of time is advised. Doing a history check is helpful as well. Anything you can find out ahead of time will be to your advantage.
16. Never be without outside contact
Make sure others outside your team are aware of where you are when on an assignment or investigation. A cell phone is a must.
17. Demonic Possession
It's extremely rare that you will ever hear of a full-fledged demonic possession. But it is something that all ghost hunters need to be aware of and briefed on. Full-possession requires an "invitation" in order to gain a foothold. However, there are activities that can be construed as an invitation. i.e. Ouija boards, séances, etc. A person with heavy addictions, sins, depression or someone who is desperately lonely are more apt to be targets. When any type of invitation is construed, whether implied or direct, it may very well be acted upon by such evil entities. Even with all that, it's still rare that evil will triumph successfully, but it is possible in some cases. Ghost hunters are somewhat susceptible because of the nature of their work.
18. Lower Level Entities
There are other less severe life forms that we need to be aware of as well. They are evil and are here to weaken the population through their influence. Their ultimate goal is to distract us from our life duties and make us as unproductive as possible. These creatures are subtle but very much determined. People that allow themselves to be heavily influenced in this direction are also more prone to demonic possession. This type of entity uses distraction through such things as computers, video games, unwholesome activities, etc. If you miss out on important family outings or you lose your job because you want to stay home and play video games, etc, then they have gained some control. It's called, lower level possession. Ghost hunters need to avoid this trap at all cost. Refer to codes 5, 6, 11 & 13. And for a good resource, buy a book on Psychic Self-Defense.
19. Be scientifically minded
Strive to prove the existence of ghosts and the afterlife. We as Ghost Hunters cannot simply rely on the word of someone with a particular gift. We need to know for ourselves and we need to document it in our studies.
20. Rely on your senses
Be ever mindful of your own awareness. We are all born with the gift of inspiration. We also have a bell (so to speak) that sounds off when we are in danger. It's a gift that needs to be focused on. Constantly pay attention to this special ability that we all have. Especially when on an investigation. As you become more aware and in tune, you will be able to better sense ghosts & other types of entities.
21. Evidence is everything
All we really have to show for our hard word is the evidence we collect. So take notes, write up reports, snap pictures, collect EVPs. Keep a log.
22. Be aware that theories change
What is believed to be true today may not be tomorrow. If there's anything we can depend on, it's change. What we may know about ghosts today may change tomorrow. We need to embrace credible evidence and use that knowledge to our advantage. So be willing to let go of old theories when need be. If we don't, we will be left behind.
23. Expect Results
Go into every assignment with an attitude of well defined purpose. Go knowing you have your preliminary research accomplished beforehand and then have a plan to make it all come together. A good investigator is organized and thorough. The right attitude yields results!
24. It's okay to be afraid
That is, as long as it doesn't seriously effect the investigation or make you especially vulnerable.
Excessive fear will make you ineffective as a contributing team member and will make you a target for entities. Excessive fear or anger feeds and empowers curtain types of entities. Enjoy the thrill of the chase and scream if you must. But everything in moderation.
25. LIVE THE CODE !
It will protect you on your journey and guide you on your quest. Ghost hunting will be one of the most exciting experiences of your life... enjoy!
